Engineering Management Modelling

Plane Aerodynamics Investigation

Design of a spreadsheet to calculate flight of a plane across 2.5km

OVERVIEW

BRIEF

The aim of this task was to apply engineering principles to produce a plane model that simulates flight at the slowest velocity possible over a 2500m distance. This task allowed us to re-design a basic aircraft and to critically analyse flight performance.

DELIVERABLES

  • Excel Spreadsheet
  • Group Presentation

SOLUTION

Overall our model was successful as we found the lowest velocity with a realistic wingspan of 10m to allow our plane to fly at 1500m. The wingspan was chosen based on material selection and difference in mass compared to the fuselage.

SOFTWARE USED

Siemens NX11

CALCULATOR LOGIC

Spreadsheet Logic

The logic behind the calculator used a number of equations related to the dynamics of a plane such as lift, drag and thrust. There were a number of user inputs that could be changed such as; wing length, fuel in the tank and no of engines which would affect the efficiency of the flight. Using graphical data, the optimum values of these user inputs were chosen to ensure maximum efficiency over the 2500m flight. This project was overall extremely successful and an extremely effective way of introducing the basis of solving engineering problems using excel logic.
